Can Chocolate Actually Help Anxiety or Depression? The Myth

With all the Chocolate holidays behind us now, the two biggest being Valentine’s day and Easter…I’m wondering how many of us have used the devious little confectionery sweets to improve our mood?  Or Is it a Myth?

Chocolate Cause Or Cure Depression?

Can Chocolate improve your state of mind?  As far as I can remember, I’ve heard/read about “CHOCOLATE” as either a cure for depression or a cause for depression.  It seemed like there always was a study to support either side.

According to a study published this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, people who feel depressed eat about 55 percent more chocolate than their non-depressed peers. And the more depressed they feel, the more chocolate they tend to eat….

“There is some relation between chocolate and depression,” says Scott Bea, a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio. “Chocolate could be a fix for depression or it could work the other way, meaning that people who overly use chocolate could be prone to depression.” (Chocolate & Depression 2010 CNN )

🙂

Researchers, led by Natalie Rose, M.D., of University of California, Davis, and University of California, San Diego, studied the chocolate consumption of 931 men and women over a month.

…Those that consumed 11.8 servings exhibited signs of major depression. The smaller consumption group was just fine.  (2010 Chocolate Consumption May Cause Depression)

When I first drew the Mental Health Humor Cartoon below back in August 2008, I heard Dard Chocolate was good for depression.  See the first version of Mental Health Humor Cartoon 2008 HERE.

There seems to be a mythical fact that Cholocate can help our moods… and it could have a connection to THC – Marijuana in Chocolate? Cool!

Is that a myth I want to believe so much that it becomes true? True that CHOLOCATE is a cure-all for our depression. And I get free weed in every bite.  More about the Marijuana in Chocolate later.

Re-Boot the Chocolate Cartoon

The question is: can it really help with depression?  See my re-boot drawing of a 2008 Mental Health Humor Cartoon below. Your one point of view, “chocolate helping depression is a myth!” But can it be trusted, since it is from a chocolate bar running for its life?
