Parents: rich, middle-class, poor or highly educated or drop-out CAN all have bratty, greedy, self-entitlement and ungrateful children.  It’s not an affliction only of one classification.  It’s not a boy thing or a girl thing. Brats come in all shapes and sizes, all ages. Yes, snotty-little-brat-ism CAN affect all children.  And it CAN spread like chicken pox if left to run a muck.

What can parents do to avoid Raising Ungrateful Children?

Nothing! Parents can’t avoid Raising Ungrateful Children 100%. No, not in a world that sells us on the idea that we are the most important person in our life and we should spoil ourselves daily.  In a world where every TV advertisement is about some type of new device, gadget, or toy that we must have NOW!

In a world, where what you “want” takes precedent and center stage over the value of your basic needs. Like Buying the latest phone, Tablet, watch, Virtual Reality Headset, Printer, wireless headphones or whatever…only to want something better a week later.

Being Ungrateful is not always for material things that are bought, it’s not always money.  Most times Ungratefulness can stem from being Ungrateful for others. Ungrateful for time or effort put forth for you to do something good for you. You brat!  Kids learn this Ungrateful trade very quickly.

Mental Health Humor – Pearls Before Swine

It’s like throwing pearls be swine.  It seems like for some children,  the more you do, the more they think they are entitled.  And as a parent, we can much of the time feed the beast.

  1. Appreciate Everything.

Do your kids appreciate anything?  Children that work to accomplish a goal or prize, they tend to treasure that reward more.   The harder or more work needed the more appreciation.   It’s not foolproof, but it’s a start.

2. Empathetic Towards Others.

Take the kids for a walk in others’ shoes. Treat children with the same courtesy and empathy as we would any adult. Kids who are loved and treated well have a template for how to treat others. Kids learn what they live says, Marie Hartwell-Walker, Ed.D

3.  Danyelle Little family counselor gave her these “Mom rules” for dealing with Ungrateful Children.

  • Do not reward negative behavior.

  • Say no and mean it and follow up with action, no matter how much I am worn down.

  • Set goals and once it is achieved, give a reasonable reward.

  • Do not show my frustration. Instead, speak calmly and rationally so that my son won’t mimic my behavior.

  • Do not try to give everything my son wants. There must be a limit set.

  • Realize it’s not too late to change this behavior.

  • Remain positive even in un-positive situations.

  • Do not try to buy love.

What do you think, do you have any tips for Ungrateful Children?

Sharing is not every child’s best trait, but some kids excel in sharing with everyone (without being prodded or asked or told to do so).
