The History Of ZIKA – I first found out that the Zika Virus is not new.  I actually thought it was a brand new vector-borne virus.  The World Health Organization first identified in Uganda in 1947 .” Zika was in the monkeys!

I can hear Charlton Heston’s line from the Planet of the Apes now,

“you damned dirty ape!”

So this was not new “Outbreaks of Zika virus disease have been recorded in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.” but in the animal population… Them Apes!

Where I find it strange, WHO says at some point…From the “1960s to 1980s, human infections were found across Africa and Asia, typically accompanied by mild illness.”  Was it due to deforestation or overpopulation, the Aedes aegypti mosquito suddenly gets a thirsting for human blood?

The first large outbreak of disease caused by Zika infection was reported from the Island of Yap (Federated States of Micronesia) in 2007. Yet still no infection and microcephaly. Not until July.

In July 2015, Brazil reported an association between Zika virus infection and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

And in October 2015, Brazil reported an association between Zika virus infection and microcephaly.

Causes of microcephaly include infections, malnutrition, or exposure to toxins.
Symptoms vary and include intellectual disability and speech delay. In severe cases, there may be seizures and abnormal muscle functionality.
There is no cure for microcephaly. Treatment involves supportive care, symptom management, and close monitoring. ~ Google Search PDF – https://www.gstatic.com/healthricherkp/pdf/microcephaly.pdf

While most cases are from “travels to the states”  here in Florida, specifically Miami, made national news when sections were quarantined off due to outbreaks.  Then last week– a first and this is scary, the Zika virus is being found in the mosquitoes.

“This is the first time we have found a Zika virus positive mosquito pool in the continental United States,” confirmed Erin Sykes, a CDC spokeswoman.

There are two sides of Zika.  The Human side and Political Side.  The human side seems devastating seeing the photos of babies, but how is the government going to pay billions to study and develop a vaccine for Zika?

The human side devastating and painful babies malformed with brain damage.

Zika has mild effects for most people but doctors believe that infection during pregnancy can result in babies with small heads – a condition known as microcephaly – and other serious developmental disorders. Singapore had 155 cases as of Wednesday, September 1. 2016. ~ ¹Zika alert as Singapore infections mount
