Will Bullies Ever Go Away?

While a Mental Health Humor cartoon does not really fully define any of the three types of bullies; rather it’s showing a former bully playing a fair game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Maybe, he has learned his lesson. Maybe, he’s just looking for a loop-hole.

Has there been over-education of Anti-Bullying? Do kids turn a deaf ear to the message? Does it work or does it only have teeth when there is a death?

Some school administration says working together they “hope” things can get better. What will happen next is left directly to the administration staff  for the appropriate discipline. Will it be a stern talking to? A suspension? Or detention? Or will law-enforcement be involved? Or will they “hope” it all works out?

When it comes to bullying, I can’t help but think of a quote from Jurassic Park when Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeffrey Lynn Goldblum) finds out the dinosaurs “can’t breed in the wild.” Thanks in part to the wisdom of population control as security precautions. Says:

life will not be contained. Life breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, uh… well, there it is…I’m simply saying that life, uh… finds a way.” ~ Dr. Ian Malcolm

I can’t help to apply that quote to the BULLY, or Bullies and Haters of the world! Anti-bulling or bullies, education, and campaigns it seems – they will find a way!

One can’t change the channel today without seeing a bully on T.V. It seems like they wear it like a badge of honor.  Bullying may start in youth, but it seems to have a long-lasting effect.  People are proud of it, they laugh at it… this is not funny.

It is a sad truth, but until we can TRY/LEARN to have some type of universal “treat each other as we would like to be treated” or “golden rule”  applied and humanity as a whole applies LOVE our neighbors and treats each other with love and respect…Unless that will happen, bullies will always find a loop-hole.

We may want to change every bully, but we cannot bully them to change. How loving is that?  Yes, teach them properly how to behave. Yes, have laws that have teeth  for those that violate.

How loving is that to bully a bully to do what we think is right.  Give them and their victim the support and professional help needed.

At the same time, we need to look at the victim of bullies and build tools to cope.  Bullying is a complex issue that can go on for years with parents aware or unaware.  It is violent and shameful. Nothing worse being in school then having kids turn on you, then beat you…Nothing worse than you later taking that rage out on the next kid that is singled out, just glad the bullies didn’t turn on you this time.  But now it makes you–one of the bullies.  Bullies breed bullies…can bullies change?

Can bullies change?

Can bullies change? YES, I think so, but it takes more than a poster or an assembly to do it.  Yet, it is being done.  Many former bullies now fight for others that don’t have their strong voices yet.  It may take a life altering event to open the eyes of a bully to see the harm done. Or for the bully to want to make reparations and amend the wrongs caused by bullying.  The emotional pain may not be appeased with just saying “I’m sorry” by the bully.  Knowing they will not bully again because THEY NOW UNDERSTAND the pain that they are really causing.  There has to be a small victory in that.  Small victories can be few when they do happen…take joy in small victories.

Just take it!
